Vounaria,24004, Messinia, Greece

The village of Vounaria draws its name from the three hills on which it is situated. One of the hills is the site of a prehistoric fort, another is crowned by the picturesque church of Profiti Ilias and the third is the site of the village itself. From all these hills there are breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and seascape, stretching from Cape Teneron in the south to Mount Ithomi in the north.

Vounaria is a traditional Greek village and in former times was a centre for the production of ceramic jars which were exported throughout the eastern Mediterranean. The village has the last traditional wood burning kiln in the area. Today the main activity in the village is olive harvesting. The village is home to a busy olive press (operating from November to January). In the summer it is host to many visitors who come to enjoy the unspoilt beaches and landscape and savour the traditional cuisine in local tavernas.
